While Beachgoers Escaped Danger, Viral Photo Depicts Beach Patrol Dashing ‘All Out’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, has always considered the renowned shoreline as her own backyard. On a recent Sunday evening, she, along with numerous others in the area, heard cracking sounds ringing out across the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. She left her residence, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw signaled something was wrong.

As she stood on the street, talking to a pair who had rushed up the incline still dripping wet, she heard someone coming up at her rear. It was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed towards Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was alone running in the path that everyone was trying to flee, carrying that large equipment and unshod … He’s running at something that undoubtedly every instinct would instruct you to run in the other direction.

“Without a second thought, but just fully maximum effort racing.”

A Symbol of Courage In the Wake of Crisis

The photograph Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous acts of heroism in the aftermath of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid surf lifesavers, law enforcement and paramedics attending to dozens of victims.

Local Response and Support

Doolan’s account was a single example among several to be shared by the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the scene of the attack serving as a makeshift treatment center. Accounts show that other team members were also seen taking action, such as going into the ocean to save people who were struggling.

In the days after the attack, statements of appreciation were shared. An online statement expressed thanks for the lifeguards who showed that “goodness will always triumph over evil”.

The team of beach patrol later shared a statement, explaining they were “processing what occurred”.

“We are grateful all for your thoughtful sentiments and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the compassion for our team,” the group commented. “When ready, we will share our stories in the belief that it aids those impacted.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many permanent beach safety officers, said that the crew rose to the occasion from the instant the violence commenced right into late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many emotional accounts, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” stated a local official.
