The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.

A new acronym came to light a few months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is found only in Gaza, according to doctors such as child health specialists. Typically, it is uncommon for doctors to treat a minor who has seen the death of their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal about many doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs assert that atrocities are ongoing. The Israeli government has denied these claims, consistent with how it disavows each claim it is implicated in. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, it seems, is what global togetherness manifests as.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of a person in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. A competition that initially championed peace has transformed into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
