McKenna's Position on Celtic

The Ipswich boss referred to Celtic as "an enormous football club" but stressed he is "in the middle" of a "long-term project" with the Championship side.

The mid-thirties took charge of Ipswich in 2021 and guided the team to the Premier League with consecutive elevations, but they managed only a handful of victories last season as they were relegated back to the Championship and they presently occupy twelfth place in the Championship.

"I have not had such conversations," the London-born ex- Irish young player said when questioned about being on the candidate list.

"It's not something I have considered seriously, or where any part of my focus is this week.

"I have a special position here at a remarkable team. And we're at a really important phase of the season. Anything outside of that hasn't reached my awareness."

Context and Contractual Details

Reports indicate that McKenna would be open to speaking to Celtic given his childhood support.

"Growing up, we all have our affinities," he said when questioned about these. "It's unlikely all people has to publicly and declare what they used to be, but of course it's a really big football club."

The coach signed a fresh multi-year deal in 2024 and was asked about his reported £5m release clause.

"Throughout coaching agreements, there are provisions," he replied. "I don't know what my specific terms are and, if I did, I wouldn't tell you regardless!

"I tackle this role like I'll be Ipswich manager indefinitely. I understand that's not invariably going to be the situation, but I will consistently do my best as while I remain in position."

Bellamy's Situation

Bellamy played for Celtic on temporary transfer from Newcastle United in the mid-2000s, but the former Wales striker is inclined to finish the current global tournament campaign, a position that would practically eliminate the mid-forties from immediately taking the Celtic job.

Wales are currently third in their World Cup group behind leaders Belgium and second-placed Macedonia.

Victories over Liechtenstein and their rivals in November would secure their place in the qualification play-offs, but they are all but assured of making those, due to a successful European competition campaign, should they fail to finish as Group J second place.

Considering his present position, the Wales manager, whose contract concludes after the European Championship, would not be available until after the qualifying matches at the minimum.
