A uniquely yellow-colored residential building visible behind helped us verify the video.
Our team is analyzing images and video posted earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the location of where the images were from was based on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Locating other buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
