New research reveals that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using these treatments need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
