Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at School in Nigeria

Armed conflict at school
Schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for armed groups

Gun-wielding individuals have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an assault against a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.

The armed faction breached the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.

The armed individuals "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and taking the pupils captive from their living quarters, authorities disclosed.

One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.

Witnesses reported a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who arrived firing sporadically to create fear.

Area inhabitants told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a number of girls into adjacent wilderness.

The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and vigilante groups" to the area.

A organized locating and saving mission is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and suspected escape routes.

In the past few years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The incident in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge troubling the locality, leaving families in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they wait and hope for their daughters' safe return.

Protection challenge in Nigeria's northern territories has escalated dramatically in the last several months, with learning centers bearing the brunt of the unrest.
