Overview

The inherent challenges of round-robin tennis mean by this stage of the ATP Finals we’re often left puzzled, scrambling about for a mathematical tool and striving to determine the mind-boggling qualification scenarios. Yet this evening's contest between Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime, thankfully, is easy. It's a direct elimination: the successful player sets up a final four battle against Alcaraz at this year-end tournament; the loser heads out.

The German is the frontrunner for this: the elite athlete is the player with greater achievements, has been the champion at this tournament on two prior occasions and holds the advantage in their personal record with six victories against three defeats, having won both their past encounters on an enclosed hard court.

If Zverev holds back, as he did against the Italian, and Auger-Aliassime takes it to the German with his powerful serves and bold strategy, it might very well be the young Canadian – the former prodigy who was previously positioned before Alcaraz and Sinner to take over from the Big Three – who earns the uncertain distinction of facing the global leader the next day.
