A standout among Avatar's top installments gets a dedicated Magic: The Gathering collector's set.
Usually, summary installments are loathed by fans as a needless time filler, or sometimes accepted as essential in television in the era of episodic releases. However, this wasn't the case, but Avatar: The Last Airbender proved it with "The Ember Island Players," a popular episode during its concluding run which is now receiving a special Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair collection.
Details about the collector's edition
The complete Secret Lair superdrop for the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender edition was announced earlier this month. It features five distinct sets, and even though a set named "My Cabbages!" is clearly funny homage to the show's beloved recurring figure, the remaining sets appear slightly uninspired, aside from one remarkable entry: "The Ember Island Players."
Inspired by installment 17 from season 3 of the beloved series, this collector's drop includes the following cards:
- 1x Phantasmal Image as "Absolutely Accurate Actor"
- 1x Braid of Fire
- 1x Cursed Mirror
- 1x Mask of Memory
- 1x Thespian's Stage
What makes this segment stands out
Audiences of the show fondly remember this installment, which served as a summary of Aang and the group's journey before the series' finale. Unlike other recap episodes, or "clip shows," "The Ember Island Players" was not driven due to production constraints or creative challenges. The show's makers truly wanted to give fans a chance to revisit the series' story, yet they chose to approach it inventively.
Throughout the segment, the heroes observe a play based on their exploits on a stage located on Ember Island, titled The Boy in the Iceberg. The entire performance is factually incorrect, cheesy, and overall hilarious. It succeeds since it plays with the heroes' understanding about themselves, setting them against compared to how society (and especially the antagonist nation) perceives them. It contains the right amount of introspective humor, and it ends up arguably the finest interpretation of Avatar released so far.
Value and cost
In terms of value, this represents an excellent Secret Lair because of one major element: Braid of Fire. This particular card is valued between $20 and $40 through card retailers as of now, and for $29.99 you can snag the entire Secret Lair, or for $39.99 for the foil version.
Magic's Avatar: The Last Airbender collection will be available during early access events beginning November 14 and releases worldwide on November 21.
